Refers to the number of strokes a player's score exceeds par for the number of holes played.

over par Number of strokes a player's score is over the par for the holes played. For example, if a player shoots a score of 40 on nine holes whose par is 36, she is said to be four over.

Bogey: A score of 1 over par on a hole, for example a 6 on a par 5.
Borrow: A term, mostly British, referring to how much break will need to be anticipated when lining up a putt.

Triple Bogey: Three over par on one hole.
Trouble Shot: A shot taken from a bad lie such as behind trees or in bunkers or rough.
Turn: The halfway point of an 18 hole round. A player "makes the turn" after playing #9 and heading to #10 tee.

Bogey A score of one over par on a hole. (The bogey on 18 cost him the championship). Borrow The amount of break a player allows for when hitting a breaking putt.

Dormie: in match play, a player is dormie when leading a match by as many holes as there are left (i.e. 4 up with 4 holes to play).

Draw: a shot that, for a right-handed golfer, curves slightly to the left; often played intentionally by skilled golfers.

handicap: For example, one whose handicap is 16 is expected to shoot 88 on a par 72 course, or 16 strokes over par.
hanging lie: Your ball is on a slope, lying either above or below your feet.
hardpan: Very firm turf.

The idea is that if Golfer A shoots 10 over par on a course with 113 slope rating, and Golfer B shoots 10 over par on a course with 123 slope rating, the two golfers -- though both shot 10 over par -- cannot be considered equal.

So the average three handicapper shots approximately 4 strokes over par on this course. However, the fourteen handicapper will find his score increases faster than the low handicapper on the same course so his handicap must also reflect this.

Two or more shots 'dropped' to par result in scores known as a Double-Bogey (two shots over par), Triple-Bogey (three over par) and so on.

So far no particular terms for 2 or 3 or more over Par have become standard. They are just double and triple Bogeys. Some golfers use the term Buzzard for a double Bogey and some use terms from bingo for particular numbers.

Your handicap is the number of strokes over par you average over four rounds at a golf course. For instance, if your average score is 88 on a par 72 course, you are given a handicap of 16.

DOWNHILL LIE: When your right foot is higher than your left when you address the ball.

bogey A score of one over par for the hole. To play a hole in one stroke over par.
bogey competition A form of stroke play in which players play against a fixed score at each hole. Scored as in match play with the winner being the most holes.

If they say 90, which is averaging one over par on every hole, then I recommend they try to shoot one stroke over par on each hole. This way, it takes away the pressure of trying to make par on each hole, and often results in better overall scores.

Montgomerie also shot 15 over par for the tournament. In fact the top 3 players in the fairways hit category came in 32nd, 37th and 46th place in the tournament as far as score was concerned.

Bogey: a hole played one stroke over par. Or you could end up with a double bogey (two over par), a triple bogey (three over) or worse - it is not uncommon to suffer from a bogey five! ...

Definition: "Buzzard" is an archaic term meaning 2-over par on any given hole. In other words, it's a rarely used synonym for double bogey.

You got it, twenty-five strokes over par; just a bit under 100. Somehow, that works out in the average man's mind to a handicap of fourteen, not twenty-five. I guess that's just a respectable, average sounding handicap.

Eagle: A hole played in two strokes less than par.
Bogey: In the United States, a hole played in one stroke more than par (a double bogey is two over par); in Britain, the number of strokes a better-than-average player is expected to take on a hole.

Pass the 36-hole Playing Ability Test (PAT). There is a rather complicated formula that determines the exact scores that must be equaled or bettered, but a generally, an applicant must play 36 holes 15 strokes over par or better.

Give yourself a par for an up and down, a birdie if you make the chip, and a bogey if you take more than two shots to get the ball in the cup. After 9 holes, if you are more than 3 or 4 shots over par, start over.
