Pitch and run
Similar to a pitch shot but it is where the golfer hits the ball with a lower numbered club. This is to reduce backspin and loft and allows the golf ball to roll after it lands.

Pitching Tips: Learn to Take Advantage of Loft
If you find yourself trying to scoop the ball when hitting pitch shots, it's probably because you don't understand the mechanics of how pitching should work. The key is an understanding of loft.

Place 5 or 6 clubs (you could use towels or other markers) on your practice area. Place them approximately at the 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50+ yard distances. Pitch two or three balls from each distance.

Pitching, on the other hand, is a 1/2 or 3/4 swing with more weight shift and wrist cock that allows the ball to carry close to the hole with very little roll.

A pitch shot is one which lofts the ball very high up into the air, with little or no run to it.

A pitch shot is used to create loft from around the green when you need the ball to travel over bunkers, mounds, tall grass or water hazards. This shot can be played from distances of up to 40 yards and is played with a sand wedge or lob wedge.

1. Use one of the higher lofted wedges or a 9-iron. Your choice depends on the lenght of the run of the ball when it lands.

A short pitch is a golf shot hit from within 20 to 30 yards off the green. The idea is to loft the ball onto the green a few feet from the edge and run it up near the cup.

Five Key Steps to improve your Pitching
1. Don't be too squared: most people tend to play the pitching shot having their feet squared as if they were having a complete swing. This is a mistake.

Pitching Wedge
This club has typically 45-49 degrees of loft and is used for longer approach shots (about 110 yards for men, 90 yards for women). Because it's most often hit from the grass, it has minimal bounce (2-5 degrees).

Chipping and pitching of the golf ball require one main ingredient. Your hands must be in a firm position at impact. Imagine your wrists are in a cast so that they cannot break down and flip at the ball during impact.

If you think the pitch of the green will naturally make your ball roll a little to the left of the cup, pick an intermediate target that will aim a little right of the cup.

If you have a tough pitch over water, rather than rush the shot to get it over with, stand back and imagine watching yourself play the perfect shot. Watch the ball rising up and over and landing perfectly on the green.

Bump and Run A pitch shot around the green in which the player hits the ball into a slope to deaden its speed before settling on the green and rolling towards the hole.
