The Pitch Shot
A short backswing and long follow-through will ensure a crisp shot. Poor pitching results from decelerating through impact. Groove a swing with a longer follow-through than backswing. This will keep you from quitting on the shot.

 


For the low pitch shot, play the ball back in your stance (off your back toe), and place your hands slightly forward at address.

Pitch shots key in today's game
Scoring well on today's golf courses requires having a high-lofted shot in your bag. Modern golf courses have more obstacles, longer rough and larger greens that provide a huge challenge to pitch it close.

Pitch Shot: To hit the ball at a medium height into the air and onto the green using a lofted club. Usually struck with sufficient backspin so that the ball stops quickly on the green.

How is a Pitch shot different from a Chip shot?
It is different in quite a lot of ways. The shot will tend to fly higher, it will carry further through the air and roll less along the ground, in other words the ball will stop quicker.

Similar to a pitch shot but it is where the golfer hits the ball with a lower numbered club. This is to reduce backspin and loft and allows the golf ball to roll after it lands.

When facing a pitch shot from greenside rough, set your club on the toe and address by raising your hands on the grip. This makes it easier to get the ball in the air, and it keeps the clubface open through impact.

Pitch: The pitch shot is one that goes high and does not roll very far when it lands. It is needed to play over bunkers close to the green - and to get out of the bunkers if you don't get over them.

A pitch shot is a short high approach shot within 30 to 70 yards of the hole with a high lofted club, usually a pitching wedge. The ball makes a high arc and stops almost immediately after landing on the green.

What I used to do in the winter, was to practice hitting pitch shots into an old upholstered chair. This game me a specific target to aim for.

When hitting from hard sand, use a pitching wedge and play a normal pitch shot.
For fairway bunkers:
take two clubs more than normal ...

SAND WEDGE - an iron normally used to hit the ball out of the sand. It can also be used on short pitch shots.
SANDY - a player makes a sandy when he hits a shot out of the sand and sinks the following putt.

BITE - an approach shot to the putting green that when the golf ball lands it stops dead or spins back. Usually a pitch shot or short iron shot with backspin. The ball can hop forward before it bites.

Pitch - An approach shot to the green. The player does not use a full swing during a pitch shot. This shot is shorter than a normal swing, but longer than a chip shot.

Drive-and-Pitch - The type of hole on which the green can be reached with a drive and a pitch shot. Some courses have all the holes of this type. A course of this type would be known as an Executive Course.

Wedge - lofted club designed for pitch shots.
Winter rules - the privilege of improving the lie of the ball on the fairway.
Wood - woodenheaded clubs; hits ball longest distance.
