Golf Pitching Tip - Checklist
1. Use one of the higher lofted wedges or a 9-iron. Your choice depends on the lenght of the run of the ball when it lands.
2. Hands ahead of the ball, inside front thigh.

A pitching wedge. If you look on the bottom sole of your club you will notice that it will have a PW stamped on it, or just a W, or in very rare cases it may have number 10.
So how do I pitch?

The difference between chipping and pitching is simply wrist action - chipping requires no wrist action, while pitching requires some wrist action due to the length or trajectory of the shot. The set-up, however, remains the same.

Pitching, Chipping and Greenside Bunkers
These can be some of the most difficult shots in golf.

Pitching: A short shot pulling the ball into the air in a sharp arc.
Pitching Irons: The short irons.
Pitching Niblick: Old name of an 8 iron.

A short iron with a large degree of loft, used for pitching high but short shots onto the green.

Pitching Wedge: A relatively high-lofted club (45-49 degrees) used for longer approach shots.

Pitching Wedge : A lofted short iron (usually next in chronological order after the 9 iron and somewhere between 47 and 52 degrees) used to execute a pitch shot. Example: Julie regularly hits her pitching wedge about 100 yards.

Pitching, on the other hand, is a 1/2 or 3/4 swing with more weight shift and wrist cock that allows the ball to carry close to the hole with very little roll.

Pitching requires development of "feel". Only practice will allow you to land balls consistently within a certain area from a variety of distances. How much effort to give each shot must be developed with practice over time.

Pitching Wedge
This club has typically 45-49 degrees of loft and is used for longer approach shots (about 110 yards for men, 90 yards for women). Because it's most often hit from the grass, it has minimal bounce (2-5 degrees).

Pitching is the more lofted shot around the green. Usually, you need to carry the shot 75 percent of the way to the hole. Pitching should be attempted with a sand wedge or lob wedge to allow the softest shot possible.

For pitching and chipping out of tall grass, remember the saying, "the taller the grass, the tighter the grip." This keeps the club moving at a constant speed through the grass. Otherwise, the grass can close the face on the downswing.

Tournament in which teams start from different holes at the same time rather than one at time from the first tee.

Chipping and pitching:
With 11 balls, chip from 5 feet off the green to different holes with a 8 iron, pitching wedge and sand wedge and the next day with 9 iron and gap wedge. You have to pick holes that fit each club selected.

You take out your pitching wedge and hit 2 inches behind the ball. The divot goes higher and farther than the ball. You try to regroup for the next shot. Then you hit a slightly better shot, but the ball rolls into the sand bunker on the right.

Short game - The part of the game that is made up of chip shots, pitching and putting.
Short irons - The highly lofted irons.
Shotgun - The start in tournaments when everyone starts at different holes.

It is in between pitching and putting. It is a similar technique as putting (no pivot), but instead you most likely use one of these clubs: sand iron, ten iron, wedge, nine, eight, or seven iron. Draw The ball moves right to left.

A driver takes the same swing tempo as a pitching wedge, and the same is true for all the clubs when taking a full swing. The consistency in tempo will lead to consistency in contact (and thus accuracy).

A normal set of irons consists of numbers 3 to 9, together with a pitching wedge and sand wedge for use around the greens and from bunkers.

Putting, chipping, pitching, and greenside bunker play are all aspects of the short game.
Skin
a skins game pits players in a type of match play in which each hole has a set value (usually in money or points).

This means though, that you're chipping or pitching at least 10 times in an average round. The pitching and sand wedges will see a lot of action, so they should be your closest friends.

The typical golf set consisting of 3 iron through pitching wedge is becoming less and less common.

Confusingly, it was also sometimes used to describe a short pitching club for work around the green, otherwise called a pitching niblick, or lofting iron, roughly equivalent to a modern pitching wedge.

The real clincher for a new set was the fact that the pitching wedge decided to go the same way, except it detached itself from the shaft during a shot in a medal round late last year.

Gap Wedge: A wedge between the pitching and sand wedge which fills the "gap" in modern lofted clubs which can often have as much 2 1/2 clubs difference separating the sand and pitching wedge.

Perhaps you should think of using 2 irons and a pitching wedge instead of trying to hammer a driver.

Pitching wedges are rather similar to other irons. Sand wedges have specially designed undersides that make them suitable for shots from bunkers or from the rough. Lob wedges have a very high loft and are used for approach shots or from sand.
