The golf club should never get too far under or too far above the plane line as it approaches impact.

The concept of plane confuses some players. It also confuses some players that come to me for golf lessons. Many are unclear about what it is and what its impact is on your golf swing.

He’s on a terrible swing plane and can’t possibly get the club back square to the target at impact. He’s got a whole lot else going on as well, but we won’t get into all of that.

Swing Plane: An imaginary surface that describes the path and angle of the club during the swing. (As a rule, tall players tend to have a more upright swing plane than shorter players).

Swing Plane : Most easily visualized as the plane that the shaft of the club or of the clubhead's arc during the swing.

The plane angle is the angle you have chosen to come into the ball at. This could vary depending upon your choice. It could be like Ben Hogan or Colin Montgomerie -- your choice.

SWING PLANE:...Lay a golf club, broom, rake, whatever on the imaginary line I talked about above. Now set up and make a slow swing and stop at the 3/4 swing point.

Correct swing plane
Over my years of watching many swings, I think there are 2 common errors in hitting a shanked shot. 'The first is in swinging the club too far around the body on the backswing and too far out to the ball at impact.

sweet spot: Small area on clubface which will produce optimum power.

Closed Clubface (swing) A position during the swing in which the clubface is angled to the left of the target line or swing plane, generally resulting in shots hit to the left of the target.

Secondly, backspin generates lift by deforming the airflow around the ball, in a similar manner to an airplane wing. This is called the Magnus effect. Backspin is imparted in almost every shot due to the golf club's loft (i.e.

In so doing it has created the swing plane. Now the left hand and arm must reverse its direction of swing....moving the hands and club down into the ball.

Various clubs are designed with the face having differing loft (the angle between a vertical plane and the clubface when the club is at rest).

In a wedge, bounce is the angle of the sole as measured from the ground plane in a square hit position. Typically, the trailing edge is below the leading edge, which can be a lot or a little, depending on sole width and bounce angle.

This was caused by his arms lifting the club up in too steep of an angle in the backswing, in order to correct this he must rotate his body correctly in the takeaway thus resulting in a flatter swing plane.

This is probably a burning desire of most every golfer on the planet. The desire to drive the golf ball farther and straighter, allowing us to lower our golf scores on the golf course.

Handicap golfers often become fixated on technique, concerning the plane of their swing - and where the clubhead or body is at any point during the swing.
