Provisional Ball: A ball that is played, usually in an effort to speed up play, as a potential replacement for a ball that may be lost or out of bounds.

A 'provisional ball'' is a ball played under Rule 27-2 for a ball that may be lost outside a water hazard or may be out of bounds.

Provisional Ball
A ball played if the previously hit ball may be lost or out of bounds. If the first ball is found, or is discovered to be in bounds, that ball is played. Otherwise, the player continues playing the provisional ball.

In order to avoid delays in play, a provisional ball may be substituted (subject to any applicable penalty) for a ball suspected to be out of bounds or lost.

Playing a provisional gives you an immediate opportunity to correct a swing fault, and can give you a psychological boost by allowing you to follow a poor shot with a good one.
