Putting is one of the great mysteries in golf. It seems so easy to just knock the ball in the hole, and for the select few it is.
So you concede a putt to your opponent. But the opponent jabs at the ball anyway, and the ball misses the cup. Has your opponent just cost himself a stroke?

Position yourself so your eyes are over the intended line of the putt (ball line). To do this, hold your putter loosely and directly under your eyes as you address the putt and let gravity take it straight down.
Playing from the off the green, the average golfer should try to putt if possible. If the ground is too uneven or the grass is too tall, then chip.
This will help you see the line, slope and speed of the putt. (To help speed up play try and do this part of your alignment while your playing partners are lining up their putts.) ...

There is no rule saying that you can't use a putter or a chipper from a sand trap. If the sand is hard and smooth and there is no lip or greenside rough a putter is often a sound choice.

Tips & Warnings
A score of bogey is the maximum score allowed in this format. Once you hit your par shot on a hole, you move to the next hole without technically finishing the hole out.

If you hit a putt the right distance but are off-line, you will rarely be more than three or four feet away - and even we weekend hackers can hole four-footers more often than not.
But when you putt, you don't need that leverage for power. You want to run the shaft right through the middle of the forearms, because from there the pressure goes straight back and straight through.
Learning how to putt and hit shots around the greens is an important step in helping you to get better at this game faster. Take a few lessons initially if you have to in order to learn a specific putting technique.
