Rifle A Shot: To hit the ball far and hard.
Rim: To run round the edge of the cup.

Think of a sharpshooter shooting a rifle. Can you imagine any sharpshooter not sighting directly down the top of the barrel? Can you imagine one holding the rifle ten inches out from his body? Five inches? Even two inches? Of course not.

The rifle must be correctly aligned before he pulls the trigger. Likewise an archer. He positions his bow with precision before releasing the arrow. That is all we are doing in the backswing.

Shoot At The Pin Only If You Have A Rifle
Try this experiment the next time you play a round of golf. Aim for the center of every green with every full shot and forget about the pin.

The majority of elderly men I have observed have a tendency to raise their shoulders too high, apparently as though they were trying to get a sight on the ball, as if their club shaft was a rifle barrel.

In other words, the stroke needs to be like "pointing" at the target with the stick of the putter. This can be seen in rifle shooting, fencing, and archery, where the sportsman points (in turn) the rifle, the foil, and the arrow.
