rub of the green

A ball affected by an outside agency, such as a drive that hits a bird in flight.

If your ball hits an outside agency, (bird, rake, etc.), it is called a "rub of the green." There is no penalty and the ball is played as it lies.
If your ball hits you, your partner, your caddie, or your equipment in match play you lose the hole.

Opponents and fellow competitors get the rub of the green. You always get a wretched bounce.
9. The green is always one club further away than the one you choose to hit.
10. When waved through by a slower group you will immediately play very badly.

If you make a straight stroke and it misses, then either the green got you (tough - that's just "the rub of the green") or your read was bad.

- Hitting an opponent: In stroke play, if your ball hits a fellow-competitor or his equipment (if it is accidently stopped or deflected by same), it's rub of the green. In match play, you have the option to replay the shot.

When a ball in motion is stopped or deflected by an outside agency (a spectator, bird, etc.), it is called the "rub of the green" and the ball must be played as it lies.
