Scoop: To scoop the ball into the air rather than loft it. Implies sliding the club under the ball instead of compressing the ball against the club face.

BALL RETRIEVER - a long pole with a scoop on the end of it used to get balls out of water hazards.

The dreaded dropkick and/or scoop at impact are evident when the clubhead is ahead of the hands at impact. When the bottom of the swing is behind the ball, you'll hit fat shots. When the clubhead is on its way up at impact, you'll hit thin shots.

Students have a tendency to scoop at the ball. I also try to let the student understand that delayed uncocking has another great purpose--TO ALLOW THE SHIFT OF HIP AXES FROM THE RIGHT TO THE LEFT HIP JOINT TO PREVENT HITTING BEHIND THE BALL.

The chip shot can now be played with the correct downward strike. You should NOT be trying to slide the clubface under the ball, nor should you be trying to scoop the ball into the air.
