How to Become a Scratch Golfer
While the figurative answer to becoming a scratch golfer is lots and lots of practice, this article will more or less explain the literal answer and the process a golfer must go through to have a scratch handicap.

 


scratch golfer-- A golfer with a zero handicap. Typically a scratch golfer should average a score of about par each round.

To be a scratch golfer (one who plays at par) you must hit over 365,000 balls by the time you are 30. That's 50 balls a day for 20 years. To have a single digit handicap you must hit over 182,500 balls by age 30. That's 25 balls a day for 20 years.

Course Rating: The overall difficulty of a golf course under normal conditions for a scratch golfer. The number is equal to the average of the better half of a scratch golfers scores.

To help interpret the graphic, out of 10 fundamentals it is estimated that Tiger performs 4 of them almost perfectly (excellent rating) while the average tour player only performs 3 of them at this level and the scratch golfer only 1.

For example if two players were going to play against each other, and one player doesn’t have a handicap, also referred to as a “scratch golfer' (scratch means a zero handicap), and the other golfer has a 12 handicap.

The par of each golf course can be said to be the number of strokes it would take a scratch golfer to complete a round in which two puts were taken on each green.

Course Rating - A course is rated based on the score a scratch golfer should shoot on that particular course. The higher the course rating, the more challenging a course for the amateur golfer. (Note: refer to Slope Rating).

This is the score it would be expected a scratch golfer would go round in. This can differ from the course par by anything up to +3 to -3 of the course par. It is this number which is used for handicap adjustment, rather than the par of the course.
