Shanking is hitting the ball toward the back of the club face (at the hozel) usually begins with too much of the body's weight on the toes. This causes the club head to move from the outside to the inside in the swing.
A golf shank really isn’t much of a swing flaw. If you stand too close to the ball, you might hit more shanks than the next guy.

Typically, a more experienced player will see this type of flaw creep into their game. A shank is caused because you are rolling onto your toes when you hit the ball. This puts you closer to the ball than you were at set up.

Without question, the worst shot in golf is the shank or dreaded hosel fade. This shot occurs when the club swings too much out in front of you at impact.
Wrap the shank of the hook with tan fly-tying thread. Form the wraps around the shank beside the bead head, and wrap them down the bend of the hook. Wrap the thread back up to the bead head, and then halfway back down the shank.

The first ball is shanked, or dribbles forward only a few yards. No matter. So it's not a great shot, not even a good one. Another ball is brought into play and a "mulligan" is announced.
