Our Best Tips for Hitting Out of a Sidehill Lie
In an ideal world, we wouldn't hit balls into embarrassing lies in the first place. But the fact is, we do it, no matter how good or well-practiced we are.

 


Sidehill Lie: A lie with the ball either above or below your feet.
Sink: To make a putt.
Sit: Telling the ball to drop softly, and not roll after landing.

Sidehill lies can be challenging, but not if you know what to expect when you encounter one. For starters, when the ball is above your feet, it's going to hook. Below your feet, the likely shot will be a fade.

SIDEHILL LIE - this refers to a lie when the ball is resting on a slope and the golfer's feet are either above or below the ball.

Pure sidehill lies without any element of running uphill or downhill are very rare. The usual lie has a combination of sidehill and uphill / downhill.

When you have a sidehill lie, take a little extra time to plan the shot, because you usually have to allow for the slope.

BALL BELOW FEET
The ball below your feet on a sidehill lie will tend to peel off to the right. This tends to be a challenging shot for most players because of the difficulty maintaining address posture, resulting in a low slice or topped shot.

I think the ball below your feet on a sidehill lie is the most difficult of all sloping lies. It is for me anyway.The biggest mistake made when faced with this type of shot is too bend the knees to much to reach the ball.

You can change targets on each shot. Vary the terrain where you hit shots. Hit shots from uphill, downhill, and sidehill lies. You get the picture. Don't just hit balls from a flat, perfect lie on the range to the same target.
