sky-- A mishit golf shot in which a golfer hits too far under the ball causing it to pop up high in the air and typically travel a shorter than desired distance.

Sky: Term give to a shot, usually with a wood, that goes much higher and shorter than desired. A "skied" shot is often hit on or near the top of the club.

When a ball rolls on a tilted surface, the "hoop" or axis of rotation of the ball is perpendicular to the surface, rather than being "straight up" in relation to gravity and the top of the sky and the center of the earth.

sky: As roof; to hit underneath the ball, usually with a wood and so propel it upwards rather than forwards.
slice: A shot that starts left of target and curves to the right of target.

This is a subtle piece of golf etiquette, but it comes into play quite often when the sun is lower in the sky. This game has many distractions, and shadows moving in your swing while you're trying to concentrate on the shot is very disturbing.

Now look at the club face - the toe of the club should be pointing to the sky (perpendicular to the ground and shaft). This is the proper position for this step of the swing and is achieved by most players, whether they slice or hook.

If the left wrist is in this flat position the clubface will be parallel to the target line, or the toe of the club will be pointing vertically towards the sky.

Now take the club back to hip level { the same as the person in the diagram above} simply make sure if you look at the tip of the clubhead that the toe of the club is pointing straight up to the sky, ...

From this set-up position, simply lift your back shoulder up toward the sky, and let the hands bring the club up with the shoulder (keep your lower body still).

If you have a closed face at the top (once again, it's facing the sky) then a great thought is to feel as though you are grabbing rope with your right hand at the top of your swing. This will firm up your right wrist so it doesn't bend back.

Finish with the clubface open (pointing up to the sky) to give the shot the loft and spin to stop the ball quickly on the green.

This means that when the club is at waist height, you should be able to look back and see your thumb pointing to the sky. Here's another trick: Imagine that your hand is in a handshake position, with the palm facing neither up nor down.

In a golf shot, this is exactly what happens to make the ball curve across the sky as a slice. This can often be confirmed by looking at the divot.
