Takeaway Tip from Ben Hogan
What We Can Learn from Hogan's "No Hands" Takeaway
By Brent Kelley, About.com Guide ...

Golf Swing Takeaway
The most important thing to think about now is just what Roy said during “Tin Cup'. You must take the club away from the ball with your body….primarily your shoulders.

The one piece takeaway in which the shoulders, arms, and club go back as a one piece unit is a myth! ...

Tip #39: The Takeaway
If you've developed a sound set of pre-swing fundamentals, the rest of the game is little more than, as one instructor put it, "two turns and a swish." ...

The image of such a brush on the bottom of the putter is useful in getting the stroke straight in the takeaway, initially, and then in the throughstroke.

takeaway-- The initial part of the golf swing in which the club is moved backwards away from the ball.
tap in-- An easy, very short putt.

Takeaway Drill
Most golfers don't understand the importance of drills and doing them correctly. Drills will make you a better golfer in a shorter amount of time than if you try to hit a large quantity of range balls.

takeaway: The initial movement of the club.
tap-in: Very short putt.
target-line: The aiming line which passes through both the ball and the target.
tee: A wooden or plastic peg on which the ball is set for the first shot on a hole.

Takeaway - The act of taking the club away from the ball to the swing. Although covering only a few inches, it is generally considered to be a movement of prime importance.

Takeaway: The movement of the club at the start of the backswing. (Her slow takeaway set the pace for her entire swing).

Takeaway : The beginning of the backswing, the initial movement of the club away from the ball and target.
Tap In : A very short put that is certain to be made. Example: I only had a tap in left after a good chip.

takeaway The start of the backswing
tap in A very short putt.
tee A disposable device, normally a wooden peg, on which the ball is placed for driving. Also refers to the area from which the ball is hit on the first shot of the hole.

Takeaway
How you take the club back during the onset of the backswing determines what route the rest of your swing will follow, making it crucial you get this step right. Let's look at the 2-8-12 rule.

Takeaway
Takeout
The money taken from the betting pool to be divided among the track, the state and the operators.

Takeaway
Tee
A small peg stuck into the ground on which a golf ball is placed. Also area where golfers play first stroke of any given hole.

Takeaway
Target Line
An imaginary (often visualized) line drawn behind and through the ball to the point a player is aiming. If the player is planning to curve the ball, this point is the initial - not the ultimate - target.

DURING THE TAKEAWAY, THE CLUB FACE MUST BE AT RIGHT ANGLES TO THE SWING PATH AT ALL TIMES. By the "club face" I mean the leading edge of the club.
By observing this simple rule, wrist rolling can be avoided.

One-Piece Takeaway Sometimes called the "modern" takeaway, it describes the beginning of the backswing when the hands, arms and wrists move away from the ball, maintaining the same relationship they had at address.

one-piece takeaway when the beginning of the backswing is initiated by the torso, arms and hands moving together as one unit or in one piece
Example: Many touring professionals favor a one-piece takeaway.

Handsy takeaway. The takeaway should be more of a one-piece move with the rotation of your shoulders leading your arms along a path to the inside and up to the top of the backswing.

I had been too busy learning about how to keep the right knee bent during takeaway and whether the rules allow one or two club-lengths' relief from an immovable obstruction.
Now would be the time to plunge in.

Yes, the takeaway. If you take the clubface back improperly, you will start a chain of improper swing flaws. The five or twenty things that you are always looking for to not happen, will happen.

This swing teaches a very simple takeaway, unlike the conventional swing that teaches a one piece takeaway. The one piece takeaway teaches to move the club back low to the ground and slow.

There must be no twisting/turning of the forearms, and no intentional bend of the wrists (in any direction), especially during the ‘takeaway’ part of the backswing.

Forward Press: The action of the hands prior to the commencement of the takeaway for a golf shot or putt. It typically involves a slight forward action of the hands toward the target in a modest wrist cocking motion.

1) Make a fluid, one-piece takeaway, moving the hands, arms, and shoulders back together, remembering that the backswing sets up the downswing--smooth back usually means smooth down.
2) Maintain your head position until after impact.

Have a nice low wide takeaway to promote a better and flatter swing.
Irons
When hitting irons you should be aiming to hit down on the ball; this will create spin.

Most golfers waggle their club before starting their takeaway and the majority do it simply to ensure that they stay loose and relaxed, and do not 'freeze' over the ball before pulling the trigger.

Allow your head to slightly swivel toward the right on your takeaway, and on the downswing, keep your eye on the ball but allow your head to swivel back to the left a bit.
Quick Tips
The Setup ...

Do you have motion in your pre-shot routine? Do you waggle the club prior to the takeaway? Pre-shot motion in the feet and in the club in the form of a waggle helps:
2) Set the pace for a specific type of shot.
3) Eliminate tension.

This was caused by his arms lifting the club up in too steep of an angle in the backswing, in order to correct this he must rotate his body correctly in the takeaway thus resulting in a flatter swing plane.

BACKSWING
The first part of the swing wherein you move the club away from the ball. Also known as the takeaway. If you want to know the techniques on doing the Backswing, go to our Backswing section.

Forward Press: Targetward shift of the hands, and perhaps a right knee, just prior to takeaway.

When your head is in a fixed position, the hip turn is also restricted, commonly resulting in a topped shot. Allow your head to slightly swivel toward the right on your takeaway, and on the downswing, ...

Play the ball in the center or slightly back of center of the stance. On the takeaway, break the wrists earlier than normal. On the downswing, hit down on the ball and hit it HARD. Follow through as much as the lie will allow.

The movement, when done properly, will show your legs spelling the letter K in the alphabet on your takeaway. Foot action and Leg & Knee action are in sync -- almost like your staging a little dance with excellent balance. Remember...

Finally, your swing is going at such a high speed that it's a physical impossibilty for you to even attempt to make any adjustments so commit yourself to doing the right things properly in your setup and takeaway because after that things are out of ...

Takeaway - The start of the backswing
Tee - A peg which is inserted into the ground and on which the ball rests
Teeing ground - The starting place for the hole.
