tee off-- To hit the initial shot on a given golf hole from the tee box area.
tee up-- The act of placing a golf ball on a tee in order to tee off on a hole.
tee-shot-- The initial shot on a golf hole played from the tee box.

Tee Off
The first shot that is played by the golfer on each hole. In one round the golfer will 'tee-off' eighteen times.

Tee Off : To hit a shot from the tee area. Example: After Bill teed off he made sure his group had a scorecard.

Tee off between and not in front of the tee-markers. You may tee off up to two club-lengths behind the front line of the tee-markers.

Then tee off from the side nearest to the trouble and play away from the trouble. That way you can hit a poor shot and still not be in the mire.

The next time you tee off on the golf course and hit a great distance shot, you might think it's your swing. But you're actually getting a lot of help from your golf ball.

Ball in Play A ball is in play as soon as the player has made a stroke in the tee off area. It remains in play until it is holed out except when it is out of bounds, lost, lifted or when another ball is substituted in accordance with the rules.

Example: A shotgun/shotgun start usually saves time, as all groups start and finish at the same time instead of waiting to tee off one group at a time. shotmaker 1.

If Player A teed off on the first hole and Player B holed the final putt, Player B would not tee off at the second, meaning that Player A could, in theory, play every tee shot on the round. The team with the lowest score wins the hole.

Teeing Ground - The "teeing ground" is the start place for the hole to be played.

Driver This is the club you normally tee off with, meaning that the ball may be placed on a tee. It is considered a wood. It is the longest club in the bag, and it has the least amount of loft (except the putter).

Players on a team tee off, the best of the two tee balls is selected and that ball is then played alternate-shot until holed. This format is very much used in club competitions.

When you prepare to tee off and you are facing a long distance hole, you may consider taking your stronger wood and hit as hard as you can.

Shamble - Like in a scramble, all members of a team (usually four) tee off and the best ball of the four tee shots is selected. All players move their balls to the spot of the best ball.

Honors---the person who has the right to tee off first. Usually the person with the lowest score on the previous hole has honors to tee off first on the next hole.
Hook---an uncontrolled shot where the ball severely curves from right to left.

Always take a few practice swings before you tee off, and whether you are on the fairway or chipping in to the green make sure your posture is correct, before you attempt your shot.

Are you still thinking about the drive you sliced on the first hole as you set up to tee off at the second hole? This negative thought pattern will adversely affect your game. How you perceive the situation affects each shot.

Tee Time
A "tee time" is the time your group is assigned to begin play. This is the time the group should be on the tee ready to play rather than the time you should arrive at the golf course.

For example, if you tee off the first hole with a Titleist Pro V1x, then that's what you must play throughout the round. You may not switch to any other brand of ball, nor even to any other type of Titleist ball.

Nevertheless, as soon as you tee off, and especially over the final 12 holes, you would be hard put to realise that you were not playing a course adjoining the sea that had been there for at least a century.

(2) Drop down a club or two and tee off with a 3, 4 or 5 wood. Keeping the ball in play is the best thing you can do to play better, and feel better about your swing and game.

You can use this drill as a pre-shot warm up while you are waiting to tee off. It can even be used on the course when you feel you are not staying down through the shot. You may see pro golfers do a version of the drill before some shots.

The Fairway - Much of the area covering a Golf course will be comprised of well-maintained land with short grass.

The most common game for weekend golfers is four-ball, in which two man teams play against each other. A good strategy is to let the steadier of the two tee off first. Once he gets the ball in play , the longer hitter can fire away.
Quick Tips ...

I began to tee off with my 3 iron on a particular narrow, par 5 at my home course and guess what? the 3 and 4 irons are now as comfortable for me to hit as my 9 iron.

So, if there is water or out-of-bounds on the left, tee up on the left side of the box. If there is trouble on the right, tee off on the right. This will allow you to hit away from the trouble instead of hitting at the trouble.

We live in a world where everyone is looking for a competitive edge, and some people play at a win at all cost mentality. I believe with these tips, you will go to your next golf outing "one up" even before you tee off.

Get there early - Don't be the one responsible for holding up the whole day or for forcing your team to have to tee off last of all. There's likely plenty of pre-round hospitality to take advantage of too, so don't miss out.
