A tight lie makes many golfers feel just that - tight. When there's little grass under the ball, they feel the need to help it into the air, and "helping" creates tension.

If you have a tight lie, place your weight forward and drive the club into the ground with a full-length swing. If you have a fluffy lie, center your weight to shallow the bottom of your swing arc.

High shots are very difficult to play from hardpan, tight lies, and fairway bunkers, but relatively easy from perched lies in the fairway or from light rough.

For tight lies, and/or ball from a divot, play the ball 2-3" back towards the right foot from normal. This allows a steeper downswing and compresses the ball quicker.
