With the appropriate club, chip 5-10 balls from off the green. Imagine you are playing a par two hole. If you chip it in you get a birdie. If you do not make your next putt you bogey the hole.

It's been well documented that a solid short game is the key to consistently shooting lower scores.

Up and down
When a player holes the ball in two strokes starting from off the green. The first stroke, usually a "pitch", a "bunker shot" or a "chip", gets the ball 'up' onto the green, and the subsequent putt gets the ball 'down' into the hole.

up and down-- Hitting a ball out of a sand trap, rough or other difficult area and still salvaging a par.
upright swing-- Type of swing in which the clubhead travels more directly backward and upward from the golfball.

Up And Down: Also termed "Up and In", the situation in which a player misses the green and then makes one chip and one putt to achieve his score.

Up and Down: To complete a hole in two shots from the fairway such that the first shot gets the ball "up" on to the green and the subsequent putt gets it "down" into the hole.

Up and Down: Means missing the green in regulation but still achieving par. Usually by playing one chip or bunker shot followed by just one putt.
Uphill Lie: Where the ball comes to rest on a slope above the target line.

Up and Down - This term is used often in relation to the golf par, but it doesn’t have to be. It just means that you only needed to make one putt to get the ball in the hole after reaching the green.

Getting up and down consistently from around the green is critical to improving your golf game, no matter what level of player you are. The three basic shots you need to know are high lob or flop shot, medium pitch and low chips.

How do you get up and down (chip from the sand to the green with one shot and make the ensuing putt) easier from the bunkers?
Every bunker is different, but some principles remain the same.

The idea is to feel level in the rotation with no up and down movement. When hitting golf balls try to keep your head up and the spine rotating level and not up and down.

I've covered two ways to get it up and down from the same place. In golf, there is no one way to do any shot. If you practice both the lob shot and pitch & run shot, I think it will help you shave a few strokes off your score.
Quick Tips ...
