Wedges are precision scoring clubs, swing with maximum 70% of effort.
Keep arms free, very soft and relaxed. Keep your chest turned away from the target during the wedge swing and let arms flow through the shot.

Lob Wedge (LW)

You can make a lob over various obstacles, for example water hazards, rough, ground under repair areas and bunkers, or uphill to the green

You will find these two clubs invaluable as you get better at the game, the former for short shots over a bunker or water, the latter for long shots out of light rough.

Remember, a sand wedge was designed to slide under the ball, you don't need to try and lift the ball out, the club head will do it for you.

Wedges: Golfers often reach for a wedge to get them out of trouble after a bad approach shot. Clubmakers now have specialized wedges to cover just about every dire situation.

Wedge: A metal club designed to give loft rather than distance. Has more loft than a 9 iron. Used for high, shorter shots, pitches, chips and other scoring shots into the green.

A wedge with more loft and sometimes flange then a pitching or sand wedge. Usually 60 degrees or more loft.

Wedges - Make a Mini-Swing
In an effort to gain feel and control, many golfers become far too armsy when hitting partial wedge shots. All of your wedges should be hit as though they are miniature swings. Make certain that you turn away "in one piece".

In a wedge, bounce is the angle of the sole as measured from the ground plane in a square hit position. Typically, the trailing edge is below the leading edge, which can be a lot or a little, depending on sole width and bounce angle.

Sand wedge - Also known as a sand iron it is designed for playing from bunkers.
It is an extremely lofted club with a wide flange that bounces the club head through the sand.

Texas wedge

Slang for a putter, originating from the practice of Texas golfers (playing on hard, dry grounds) using putters to run the ball up to the greens.

If your wedge shots are flying short and off-line, work on quality of impact. Hit a half-dozen wedges, using impact tape or talcum powder on the clubface to check the pattern to see if contact is on the toe. An open stance creates an out-to-in swing.

A pitching wedge. If you look on the bottom sole of your club you will notice that it will have a PW stamped on it, or just a W, or in very rare cases it may have number 10.
So how do I pitch?

Pitching Wedge: An iron club designed for making pitch shots.
Pivot: The rotation of the shoulders, trunk and pelvis during the golf swing.
Placement: Accuracy in the targeting of a shot.

Take your lob wedge and practice hitting nice high soft wedges into the upturned umbrella.
Once you have practiced several shots there, move the umbrella out another 10 yards, and try again.

DUAL-PURPOSE WEDGE - a wedge that is used for more than one purpose, such as a fairway golf shot or a bunker golf shot.
DUB - a golf shot where the golf ball only goes a short way on the ground due to a mis-hit.

The Hardest Shot in Golf ...

Flange A portion of the sole of a club such as a sand wedge or putter. (The wedge's wide flange made it an effective club from the deep, powdery sand). Flat Swing A swing that is more horizontal and less vertical in plane than is typical.

It is a similar technique as putting (no pivot), but instead you most likely use one of these clubs: sand iron, ten iron, wedge, nine, eight, or seven iron. Draw The ball moves right to left.

A driver takes the same swing tempo as a pitching wedge, and the same is true for all the clubs when taking a full swing. The consistency in tempo will lead to consistency in contact (and thus accuracy).

For this drill use an eight, nine, pitching wedge, or sand wedge. You want to work on the effort needed to hit each club various distances.

The proper way to practice is to warm up with a few sand wedge or pitching wedge shots. Hit 20-30 yard shots first, then 40-50 yard shots, then 60-80 yard shots. Once you are starting to get warmed up, move up to a 9 or 8 iron.

First use a lofted club like a pitching wedge or sand wedge and grip down on the club in a place where the hand would be if the other hand was on the club. Play the ball back in the stance in line with the shoe laces of the trailing foot.
