Wrong Ball
A 'wrong ball'' is any ball other than the player's:
Ball in play,
Provisional ball, or
Second ball played under Rule 3-3 or Rule 20-7c in stroke play; and includes:
- another player's ball,
- an abandoned ball, and ...


Wrong Ball Played from Hazard

Q. A player plays a ball from a hazard (water hazard or bunker) onto the putting green. Once on the putting green the player realizes the ball he played was a wrong ball. What is the ruling?

Any ball which a golfer plays that is not the ball they began the hole with or which was brought into play after losing their original.

Playing a wrong ball (except in a hazard) - in match play you lose the hole; in stroke play you incur a two-stroke penalty and you must then play the correct ball.

A player is responsible for the identification of his own ball. He must hole out with the same ball driven from the tee.

Rule 15 -- Playing a Wrong Ball
In match play, if you play a ball that is not yours, you lose the hole. If you play the wrong ball in a hazard, there is no penalty and you must then play the right ball.

Hitting the wrong ball.
Hitting a ball or flag on the green.
Requesting Assistance. (what club to use, etc.)
Disqualification
Hitting the wrong ball and not correcting the error prior to the next teeing off.
