Acoustical tile is common in large public areas, for a variety of different reasons. Theaters, concert halls, and churches use it to make the nuances of the auditory experience more pleasant.

This is an acoustical tile ceiling. I thought it was glued right onto the wall board. It turns out it’s not. There’s a space up here of almost six or seven inches from the acoustical tile to the floorboards in the attic.

Acoustical tiles are made from the same type of fiber, but an additional manufacturing process helps these tiles absorb much of the sound in a room. A well-designed acoustical tile absorbs up to 70 percent of the excess noise in an area.

Use resilient channel, and invest in acoustical tile that's designed to block noise. Because the drop ceiling is situated below the original drywall ceiling, the plenum space in between helps isolate noises from footsteps or similar sounds.
