An air lock is a bubble of air which restricts the flow of water in a pipe.

Vestibules are often used for energy efficiency to create a form of air lock which will keep temperatures in the building more stable by insulating the inside of the structure from fluctuating temperatures outside.

This vent hole is designed to prevent an air lock from forming in the lower part of the pump.
