alkyd (alkyde, f.) An oil-based paint that has excellent covering ability and a resistant gloss finish. Commonly used on floors and in high humidity areas. It has the ability to retard moisture migration through walls and ceilings.

Alkyd primers generally work best on raw wood, they take a fairly long time to dry (usually overnight) and require mineral spirits or paint thinner for clean-up.

Alkyd paints tend to yellow with age, more quickly in the absence of light, and in the presence of fumes from epoxy products or from ammonia in cleaning products. Repainting will cover yellowed alkyd.
Alkyd paints - Paints with artificial resins (alkyds) forming their binder; often imprecisely called oil-based paints. Alkyds have replaced the linseed oil formerly used as a binder in oil-based paint.
Alkyd or oil paints may be used to paint bathroom walls if they have previously been painted with alkyd or oil, or if a particular situation requires it, otherwise latex products are the paints of choice. Latex paints come in any colour you desire.

In general, alkyd oil-based paints have poor color and gloss retention when compared to top-quality 100% acrylic paints and often exhibit poor chalk resistance.
For Alkyd paints use solvent (paint thinner) first then soapy water. For Latex paints, just soapy water.
Clean the brushes by working the solvent into the bristles. Squeeze out paint and solvent and repeat until the paint disappears.

Vacuum the dust from the repair and brush a coat of top-quality alkyd primer over the epoxy and surrounding bare wood. Finally, seal the joints between separate parts with polyurethane caulk before applying the final coats of finish.
Alkyd is used in both interior and exterior paint. Alkyd resin is very durable and forms a hard film commonly used for heavy duty applications.

By nature and design, latex paint is a somewhat thicker paint than is alkyd paint, and also dries quickly. Latex spray paints, however, are actually more emulsions than true paints.
"Massage" a very generous amount of flat alkyd paint into the wood. Nurse as much paint into the dry wood as it will absorb, and consider doing two coats if it's really in bad shape.
Wear a painter's mask, particularly if you are using alkyd paints indoors. When painting overhead, wear goggles to keep paint out of your eyes.
Wear safety glasses when sanding, filing, or doing any job that produces flying particles.
Generally use a mild detergent solution for water-based paints, mineral spirits for alkyd enamels, mineral spirits or turpentine for oil paints, alcohol for shellac, and mineral spirits for varnish.

Do not even think of painting over unpainted, lacquered woodwork or oil or alkyd paints without using a primer of this type.
If you do choose to paint, use a stain-blocking oil or alkyd primer first. In general, the best finishes are those that soak into the wood, not those that provide a surface film.
Use an oil based semi-gloss or high gloss alkyd over the primer. Use two to three coats to really build up the surface to strengthen it.
Some synthetic brushes can be used to apply both latex and alkyd paints. Be sure to check the packaging on the brush to ensure it's compatible with the paint you're using.
New latex high gloss paints or traditional gloss alkyd paints are excellent choices for moldings and wainscoting. The latex high gloss paints will have lower odor and dry much faster.
Correction: The recipe card in the PDF article misstates the proportions of the mixture. It should read: 10 parts Pratt & Lambert No. 38 alkyd varnish, 10 parts pure tung oil, 2 parts Japan drier, and 2 to 3 parts turpentine.
