Every area in your home has a recommended R-value. It may not be a conversation your contractor wants to have with you, but one well worth the time and in the long haul - well worth the money.

A good area to check would be battery connections, they sometimes corrode very badly underneath the battery end connectors and it can't be seen without actually removing the battery end on G.M.style- battery cables.

In our area, the frost line is 42 inches down, so we usually dig about 48 inches deep to be safe. And the holes should be at least 12 inches in diameter.

If the area is not wet constantly you can do a poor man's version of the repair described above by substituting penetrating liquid Minwax Wood Hardener for the more expensive penetrating liquid epoxy and Bondo for epoxy putty.

Ok, this area is kind of hit-and-miss right now, because WE are still learning and . . . well . . . we only have a few tips of our own at this point. But with that said, I'll list tips as time permits and some we have found elsewhere ...

Once the area has been dug down, 3/4" gravel stone should be laid in and tamped down tightly. Then 2" of sand, or stone dust should be spread over the gravel. Again the sand/stone dust should be tamped down. Stone dust is preferred.

Mark the area with the rough shape of the preformed pool with string and wooden pegs or garden hose.

The next area to inspect is around the flashing on the roof. Flashing is used around any structure that penetrates the surface of a roof or where the roofline takes another direction.

The hardest area was the dormers and the ceiling of the third floor where there was duct work and limited space available. I also chose not to create any crawl space in any of the four attic spaces.
