Carpet backing is exactly what it sounds like: the back of a carpet. It is the section of a carpet which does not face up, so consumers rarely interact with it.

Choosing your Backing when Installing Ceramic Wall Tile
The first step when it comes to installing decorative wall tile is choosing the proper backing.

Backing - Frame lumber installed between the wall studs to give additional support for drywall or an interior trim related item, such as handrail brackets, cabinets, and towel bars.

backing (fond de clouage, m.) Material used to provide reinforcement or a nailing surface for certain finish materials.
back putty (mastic de fond, m.) Mastic material placed in rabbets before installing glass to provide a bed for the glass.

Backing: The wall or surface to which veneer is secured. The backing material may be concrete, masonry, steel framing or wood framing.
Beam: A structural member, typically horizontal, designed to primarily resist flexure.

Backing Filler Material - Filler metal in the form of a ring, strip or consumable insert, fused in a single-welded joint.
Backing Rod - A foam plastic rod inserted in a joint to be sealed, to regulate the depth of sealant.

Carpet Backing. Fabrics or yarns forming the back of the carpet as opposed to the carpet pile or face.

The backing plate was held in place with a couple of drywall screws, which I removed with a drill-driver.
Note that there a LOTS of different heat duct registers out there, and they won't all remove like this one.

Paper backing for coated abrasives comes in four weights: A, C, D, and E. A (also referred to as "Finishing") is the lightest weight and is designed for light sanding work.

Cloth backing offers flexibility and is suitable for heavy-duty applications, such as rust removal and metal shaping.

Put Down Floor Backing
Next, roll out the underlying foam or rubber backing along the starting wall and adhere its length by trimming.

Removing Paper Backing
The paper backing will probably need to be removed separately by thoroughly wetting and scraping. Quite often, plain hot water works just fine.

Remove the paper backing or apply appropriate adhesive to the back of the veneer. (Fig. 2) Attach the veneer first to the sides of the cabinets, then to the front vertical frames, and lastly to the front horizontal frames.

Tiles without the backing require spreading an adhesive over the floor with a notched trowel, then setting the tiles.

Sisal with a vinyl backing is a sturdy floor covering. Because the flooring has been rolled up for a long time, reverse roll the flooring a few days before installation in order to allow it to lie flat.

Standard Sandpaper Backings

Resilient floor tiles (vinyl asbestos, asphalt, and rubber), the backing on vinyl sheet flooring, and adhesives used for installing floor tile. Sanding tiles can release fibers, as may scraping or sanding the backing of sheet flooring during removal.

Caution: Do not soak the carpet since the backing can become wet and cause brown spots. Shrinkage can occur if the carpet gets too wet.

The secret is in the backing or sub layer, called the substrate. Most wallcoverings are made with a paper base, coated or laminated to PVC backings.

There are two basic methods to help your scraping labors.

If the sink (or some other bathroom drain) is backing up, then the clog is farther along in the drain line. If drains elsewhere in the house are backing up, then the problem is likely to be somewhere in the sewer line.

Another potential source for water in a basement is from a drain backing up. This type of situation is generally unpredictable unless there is evidence of a previous occurance.

The backing will soften and you should be able to peel it right off. all you are left with is the face of the paper with the pattern on it.

Avoid mats with rubber or other dense backing that prevents airflow and traps abrasive dirt and moisture.
Attach felt pads to the feet of all furniture to make it easier to move and prevent scratches. Keep the pads clean and replace if damaged.

The tape has a butyl adhesive backing that will prevent any water from penetrating the sill. Next, I apply silicone sealant to the outside stop against which the new windowframe will sit and to the edge of the window ledge or stoop as it's called.

Overwetting can damage the carpet backing and underlayment causing shrinkage, discoloration, and odor.

However, now the drain pipe that the big black hose from the washer empties in to is backing up. It will drain, but it seems that it cannot take much water at once now.

Keep in mind that the type and thickness of the backing and cushioning will also contribute to the feel of the carpet underfoot. Do not skimp on the cost of the carpet padding. A few extra dollars will make a big difference.

A condition where wallpaper backing separates from the top or intermediate layer of vinyl. One frequent cause is excessive soaking. Some wallpaper, such as grasscloth and stringcloth, should relax only 3 to 5 minutes before installation.
