Insulate band joist

If your house has a basement, there is an area of great energy loss that is seldom considered. The band joist, that rests on top of the foundation, often has no insulation.

 


Band Joist- Vertical member that froms the perimeter of a floor system in which the floor joists tie in. Also known as the rim joist.
Barrel Vault- A vaulted ceiling of semi-circular shapoe, creating a dome-like appearance.

Band Joist - A wooden joist perpendicular to the direction of the joists in a floor framing system, closing off the floor platform at the outside face of the building.

Insulate the band joist area between the air ducts and the floor as space permits. Use insulation hangers (wire staves) spaced every 12-18 inches to hold the floor insulation in place without compressing the insulation more than 1 inch.

Install band joist insulation.
Install insulation on the boiler lines.
Install insulation on the water lines.
Install insulation on the water heater.

Cut pressure-treated 2 x 6 sill lumber to lie flush with the outer edges of the blocks, and then cut the band joists that rest on top of the sill.

2) Install the new faucet
Enlarge the wall opening if needed, using a reciprocating saw. Insert the freeze-proof faucet through the siding and band joist. Secure it with screws. (Fig. 3)
