BEVEL SIDING - Wood siding attached to exterior walls with nails. Looks wedge-shaped in cross-section.

 


BEVEL SIDING: Shingles or other siding board thicker on one edge than the other. The thick edge overlaps the thin edge of the next board.

Bevel Siding (or Lap Siding): Wedge-shaped boards used as horizontal siding in a lapped pattern. This siding varies in butt thickness from ½ to ¾ inch and in widths up to 12 inches. Normally used over some type of sheathing.

I was not able to find ½" x 4" bevel siding at any local lumberyards, so I made some siding from my own stock of ½" x 6" bevel siding. All I did was rip the siding to 3½" wide on my table saw, discarding the thicker portion.

Rabbeted bevel
Rabbeted bevel siding (Dolly Varden) is used only in horizontal installations. It is thicker than beveled siding and has a rabbeted overlap. It comes with a smooth or saw-textured face. (Fig. 2)
