Bitumen: Term commonly applied to various mixtures of naturally occurring solid or liquid hydrocarbons, excluding coal. These substances are described as bituminous. Asphalt is a bitumen.

Bitumen: the generic term for an amorphous, semi-solid mixture of complex hydrocarbons derived from any organic source. Asphalt and coal tar are the two used in the roofing industry.

bitumen (bitume, m.) The term covering numerous mixtures of hydrocarbons such as those found in asphalt and mineral pitch.
bleeding (exsudation, f.) An exudation of resin, gum, creosote, or other substance from lumber.

Bitumen: Any of various mixtures of hydrocarbons occurring naturally or obtained through the distillation of coal or petroleum. (See Coat Tar Pitch and Asphalt).

Bitumen - Similar to asphalt in that it is adhesive and used in sealants and damp-proof courses.

Bitumen - A black, sticky substance, related to asphalt. Used in sealants, mineral felts and damp-proof courses.
Brace - A diagonal member used to prevent part of a structure from sagging - can either be temporary or permanent.

Bitumen - a class of amorphous, black or dark colored, cementitious substance, natural or manufactured, found in asphalts, tars, and pitches.

Bitumen: Any of various flammable mixtures of hydrocarbons and other substances, occurring naturally or obtained by distillation from coal or petroleum, that are a component of asphalt and tar and are used for surfacing roads and for waterproofing.

Bitumen
A class of black or dark-colored solid, semisolid, or viscous cementitious substances, natural or manufactured, composed principally of high molecular weight hydrocarbons, of which asphalts, tars, pitches and asphaltites are typical; ...

Coal Tar Bitumen - a coal tar used as the waterproofing agent in dead level or low slope built-up roof membrane , conforming to ASTM D450, Type III
Coal-Tar Felts - A felt that has been saturated with refined coal tar.

Drippage
Bitumen material that drips through roof deck joints, or over the edge of a roof deck.

Modified Bitumen roof: A roof covering that is typically composed of a factory-fabricated composite sheet consisting of a copolymer-modified bitumen, often reinforced with polyester and/or fiberglass, and installed in one or more plies.

Bituminous Paint: (1) Originally, the class of paints consisting essentially of natural bitumens dissolved in organic solvents. They may or may not contain softening agents, pigments, and inorganic fillers. They are usually black or dark in color.

Containing or treated with bitumen. Examples are
bituminous concrete, bituminous felts and fabrics,
bituminous pavement.blisterAn enclosed pocket of air mixed with water vapor, trapped
between impermeable layers of felt.

One of the most common cool roof options for a flat or low-sloped roof is a modified bitumen roof.

Position the gravel board just above the bitumen-painted section of the post. Drill a pilot hole diagonally through the edge of the gravel board and into the post on both sides - use a couple of screws to secure the board.

Torch Down Roof or Single Ply or Modified Bitumen
A newer roofing material mostly used on flat roofs. This material usually comes in rolls and is applied to the roof with an open flame or 'torch'.

Asphalt roofs may be unsurfaced (a coating of bitumen being exposed directly to the weather) or surfaced (with slag or gravel embedded in the bituminous coating).

Create a secondary water barrier by installing self-adhering flashing tape or modified polymer bitumen strips, commonly called peel and seal, over the joints in your roof deck.

An asphaltite, one of the purest natural bitumens. The specific gravity is 1.05 to 1.10. It is used in japan and other varnishes and for waterproofing.
Glass block ...

There are two main types of established DPC membrane material: PVC and bitumen. The latter is more expensive and usually only specified when the circumstances demand extra protection.

In my limited research, it seems that the gravel should have been poured onto hot asphalt/bitumen so it would adhere. Could you provide any information regarding flat roofs and if this is acceptable? .

Gilsonite - An asphaltite, one of the purest natural bitumens. The specific gravity is 1.05 to 1.10. It is used in japan and other varnishes and for waterproofing.

Asphalt is a brownish-black solid or semisolid mixture of bitumens obtained naturally or distilled from petroleum, used in paving, roofing and waterproofing.

Damp proof course (DPC): An impermeable material built into a wall near the ground to prevent rising damp. Types available include lead-based, bitumen-based, or plastic-based. Two courses of impermeable engineering bricks can also be used.

You can cover a flat roof with tar and gravel, modified bitumen roofing, EPDM rubber roofing, asphalt roll roofing, metal, or PVC membrane. Other factors that will affect your decision include location, climate, style, level of maintenance, and cost.

I recently had my roof reshingled, so a lot of the terms are still fresh in my mind. If it is the stuff they used on my roof, it is a rubbery coating. I believe it was called modified bitumen.

Tarmac - Bitumen macadam coating aggregate for drive/path surfaces
Timber Frame - Type of house construction usually finished with brickwork outer skin
Tread - Horizontal part of a stair
TRV - Thermostatic radiator valve ...
