Brushing out - Spreading paint or other liquid finishes to give even coverage.
Colour washing - A traditional paint technique where paint is diluted and used to create a semitransparent rather than an opaque finish.
Use a water-based sealer. UV resistance is as good or better than oil and better meets VOC regulations of some areas. Plus soap and water clean up. Spraying on and brushing out gives better penetration into the wood.
