A cantilever is a twentieth century structural detail. It is used in both Architecture and Furniture Design. It is a horizontal member which projects beyond a vertical support resulting in a floating effect.

If your roof is strong enough it can extend beyond the support walls without external bracing. A cantilever is any structure, such as a roof or floor overhang, that is braced internally.

Cantilevered Structures
Cantilevering is a useful device for creating design features such as balconies, mezzanines or whole storeys that project out from the floor below and appear to float with no visible means of support.
