Casing a Door
Interior door casing can be simple or complex depending on the wood, joinery, and detailing, and can be manipulated in dozens of ways. Head casing is the horizontal member that spans the top of the door frame.

 


The casing came in 7 foot lengths. Each door used 2 full pieces for the sides and half of the third piece for the top.

Door casing is a type of trim or molding used around a door opening or frame. It can serve a functional or aesthetic purpose, or both. Aesthetically, door casing helps blend the door opening in with the surrounding wall.

Elaborate casings like these were typically reserved for public rooms, where homeowners entertained. Private areas, such as second-floor bedrooms, had simpler trim.

The casing is usually metal or plastic pipe, six inches in diameter that extends into the bedrock to prevent shallow ground water from entering the well.

To sew the casing for the rod, fold and iron as above. However, instead of hemming the curtain closed, the object is to sew in a hole along the width for the rod.

Remove door casing both sides as well as hinges so the long screws in them don't come back to haunt you. If low end of casing is at floor level or higher, place your pry bar in the small space between the jamb and the stud.

The heads of casing nails are normally countersunk and covered with putty or wood filler.
Finishing nails have rounded heads that can be driven flush with the surface of the wood (see image).

We chose custom made, solid cherry interior doors and wanted to do something special to trim them off. Rather than using standard milled casing, we decided to go with ordinary stock pieces and designed our own.
