Ceiling joists are a number of horizontal beams, running parallel from one wall to the opposite wall of the structure. The beams are attached to the top of the wall at what's known as the wall plate.

The ceiling opening is framed in the same way as the roof opening-headers are nailed between the ceiling joists to support the existing framing. Ceiling headers should be the same size as the ceiling joists.

If two separate floor joists or ceiling joists intersect over a wall, that wall should be considered load bearing.
Is it an outside wall? You should consider all outside walls load bearing.

Finally, if you're constructing a new home or remodeling, make sure any attic decking, which provides additional storage space or a platform for an HVAC unit or hot water tank, is raised above the ceiling joists to ensure proper insulation depth.

If you plan a home theater or a music room, acoustic panels work well for both walls and ceilings. Install acoustic batts between wall studs and ceiling joists, cover them with acoustic panels and add two layers of drywall with offset joints.

If 270mm of insulation sounds like a lot, you're right - it's only 27mm less than the length of the page you're currently reading. By the time you've put 100mm of insulation down, it will be level with the top of many ceiling joists.
