Cut Chair Rail and Nail Directly into the Wall Studs
Measure and cut chair rail. Fit it against the top of the tongue and groove panels and nail directly into the wall studs above the wainscoting.

 


Chair rails are often used in conjunction with another once functional but now largely decorative detail known as wainscoting.

If you have a chair rail or wainscoting and you want to paint the top and bottom of the walls different colors it's best to use the darker color on the bottom portion and the lighter on top.

The top of the chair rail is a natural shelf. The spaces between the vertical posts are good locations for more shelves. Maybe chair rail to ceiling or even floor to ceiling shelves.

Remember that not many corners are a perfect 90 degrees. And while baseboard, quarter nose and chair rail molding lie flat against the wall, crown molding does not, so it needs extra effort to cut it correctly.
