Cornice
A cornice is an architectural feature which is often molded or decorative. It is generally made of plaster and is fixed horizontally between the Ceiling and the top of the wall to cover the joint.

Cornices are simple ways to finish off the look of a room and do not require any special skills to erect, just care and attention.

Mix the cornice cement to the consistency of toothpaste, it should be sticky. If the mix is to loose add dry cornice cement and remix. If this mix is too wet or loose the cornice will fall off the wall.

A Window Cornice is an ornamental framework of wood or composition to which window curtains are attached by rods with rings or hooks.

Cornices made of plaster have both practical and aesthetic benefits. Plaster is a very durable and versatile construction material, and is well-suited to custom work in odd spaces and angles.

Valance or Cornice
In past years, valances were traditionally gathered onto curtain rods using lots of gathers (and lots of fabric).

A fabric covered cornice over a window can really dress up a room. Since this window was almost 10' long, the cornice was made from two pieces of 1/2″ plywood 24' wide joined together with metal mending plates.

Valances and Cornices
Valances are an option that can be added to almost any window treatment for a more finished look. Valances can be installed across the front of the bay or follow the curve of the bay above each window.

Decorative Cornice: Along the roof, you'll see an overhanging cornice that will have dentil moldings (a series of small blocks that project out of the cornice and resemble teeth). Simple, but elegant.
