CRAWL SPACE - A narrow, unfinished area usually filled with soil located in the cellar or basement.

Counter Flashing - Sheet metal or other material that is used at the roofline around chimneys to prevent the invasion of water into the building.

Counter flashing
Strips of metal, roofing, or fabric inserted and securely anchored to the reglet or attached to a vertical surface above the plane of the roof and turned down over the face flashing to protect the base flashing.

Most chimney flashing consists of a two-part system - the "L-shaped" flashing that abuts the roof and the chimney and the counter flashing or "cap shield" that covers the piece facing the chimney.

Skylights without curbs or with inadequate curbs do not allow for proper step and counter flashings, and are destined to leak.

Metal Flashing
Frequently used as through-wall, cap- or counter flashing. See Flashing.
Metal Flue
A metal channel through which hot air, gas, steam or smoke may pass.

The flashing’s vertical edge is usually tucked under siding or capped with a second counter flashing that is mortared into the chimney or caulked along a skylight so water can’t sneak in behind it.
