Counter flashing: That portion of the flashing attached to a vertical surface to prevent water from migrating behind the base flashing.
Course: A row of shingles or roll roofing running the length of the roof.

COUNTER FLASHING - Sheet metal placed at the base of a parapet wall over the roof covering, or at the base of a chimney, to prevent water entry.

They should never use a caulk to set the counter flashing. It does not stick well and has not strength to support the tonnage of bricks above this flashing.
