CPVC pipe has a number of features that make it an improvement over standard PVC piping. It offers greater heat resistance, withstanding corrosive water temperatures between 70°F and 90°F higher than PVC.

Polyvinyl Chloride PVC or CPVC
A type of white plastic pipe sometimes used for water supply lines. Polyvinyl Chloride has some potentially serious toxicity problems during manufacture and disposal.

Although CPVC systems are most often used in new construction, they are also compatible with other plumbing systems used in remodeling projects, the addition of a guest bathroom, or the replacement of a failed copper system.

Between pex and CPVC (hard rigid plastic) waterlines, pex provides the most resistance against corrosion and has an ability to “remember' its shape. That feature helps prevent the pipe from bursting under extreme conditions such as freezing.

Both CPVC and PB tubing can be joined to each other or to metal piping with the use of flare or compression couplings and adapters (see first image below). Flaring is done with a flaring tool.

Plastic supply lines inside the house are CPVC (chlorinated polyvinyl chloride), which is rigid and off-white, or PEX (cross-linked polyethylene), which is white and flexible.

CPVC is a slightly yellow plastic pipe used inside homes. It has a long service life, but is not quite as tough as copper. Some areas with corrosive water will benefit by using chlorinated PVC piping.

Perhaps one of the most important innovations in modern plumbing has been the development of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (CPVC), and related plastic pipe.

PB piping remains popular among many home builders because it offers savings of $200 to $600 per home compared to CPVC and copper piping. PB piping is almost the exclusive material used for plumbing in inexpensive tract houses and mobile homes.

Don't confuse Pex with CPVC. CPVC is a type of stiff vinyl that is used mostly in mobile homes. It is a poor product in cold weather. It shatters easily and is not that easy to work with.

This includes most rigid wall copper, iron and, in most places, chlorinated polyvinylchloride (CPVC plastic not regular PVC) pipe. The pipe size must match the opening size of the TPR valve discharge (usually ¾ inch).
