Cupping — A type of warping that causes boards or shingles to curl up at their edges. Typically caused by uneven drying or loss of volatiles.

CUPPING Distorting of wide boards showing curvature across the grain causing the broad surface to be concave.
CURING Treatment of concrete or cement rendering to facilitate hardening.

cupping (bombement, m.) A curvature occurring in the transverse section of sawn wood.
curb (bordure, f.) A low structure used to define and retain the edge of a roadway, walk, or other area. See curb box in plumbing terms.

Non-Cupping Floors
To resist cupping, install wood flooring with the growth ring's arc highest in the center and lowest at each edge.

Check profiles with a straightedge. A slight amount of cupping is normal on some pieces, especially with deep profile cuts, but anything with severe cupping should be sent back.

It is likely that cupping [the long edges of the board curling up] will occur if the humidity level of the subfloor or the relative humidity in your home is either too low or too high, depending on the type of flooring that is installed.

Cupping is the tendency wood to bend along its width away from the bark side. You can tell which side in the bark side by looking at the end grain of the board.
Predrill any nail or screw holes within an inch of the end of the board.

If a board is slightly humped, install it with the bark side up when possible to minimize cupping. The weight of people and objects on the deck, and of the board itself, will tend to flatten it.

The basic indicators of a deteriorating roof are cupping, buckling, loose or missing shingles, and loss of granuals.

Christian Becksvoort collaborated with a student and Andrew Garton, of the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship, to arrive at solutions for keeping plank doors from cupping or warping.

Buckling, losing of granules, splitting of shingles, cupping. Loose granules between the tabs are your best clue for failure.

House Siding Term Reverse Board and Batten
Reverse board and batten is sometimes used but is
harder to control cupping and splitting. The boards and
batten are the same sizes but are installed in reverse.

Dark colours absorb much more heat than light colours. Siding can warp, and sap may be drawn out, causing the paint to peel. Black paint causes cracking and cupping of wood in direct sunlight.

Deck boards should be laid across the joists with any cupping of the wood facing down. 2" thick decking should be spaced 1/8" apart, but 5/4" thick decking pieces should be butted against each other, as they will shrink over time.
