Spacing Deck Boards
If the deck boards are relatively dry, use 16 penny nails to establish the proper gaps between the boards.
Proper spacing allows moisture to drain off the deck between the boards.

Fasten deck boards to joists with galvanized or stainless steel spiral or ring-shank nails, or deck screws. Two spaced at about ¾-inch from board edges on each joist is adequate, although some builders prefer three.

Decking-Deck boards should be laid with the bark side up, and with both ends centered over a joist. Stagger the joints of side-by-side deck boards so they don't line up.

Occasionally, deck boards need to be replaced due to wear and tear. Using rustproof deck screws when installing the boards makes the task much easier and it is best to replace entire boards.

i am lucky to have a deck 3 ft of the ground with regular deck boards. there is also a full cathedral ceiling and an asphalt roof over it. the whole house had new shingles last year. 3 questions. there are posts and railings around the deck.

My deck boards are approximately 1/2 inch apart. With this amount of space, I cannot just lay indoor/outdoor carpet over the top. The deck is approximately 2 ft. above the ground, with rock covering the crawl space. It seems to stay dry under there.

(When the boards shrink, a 1/4-in. gap will appear between them.) Continue installing deck boards in this manner, with the angled end slipped under the coping, until you come to the next floor-joist frame.

How to Clean Between Deck Boards

HOW TO RENEW A WOOD DECK FINISH

Once installed in your project and subjected to freely moving air and the sun, the same effect occurs. Shrinkage of deck boards can be excessive, in both length and width, and twisting can loosen railings and floor boards.

Deck boards should be laid across the joists with any cupping of the wood facing down. 2" thick decking should be spaced 1/8" apart, but 5/4" thick decking pieces should be butted against each other, as they will shrink over time.
