Elaborate casings like these were typically reserved for public rooms, where homeowners entertained. Private areas, such as second-floor bedrooms, had simpler trim.

Door casing is a type of trim or molding used around a door opening or frame. It can serve a functional or aesthetic purpose, or both. Aesthetically, door casing helps blend the door opening in with the surrounding wall.

This a typical window and door casing found on the main level, all red oak, which was plentiful in Northern Michigan around the turn of the 20th century.

Trim Door Casings
When installing a new floor, you might need to trim the bottom ends of the door casings and jambs so the flooring will fit. The multitool is ideal for this job.

Remove door casing both sides as well as hinges so the long screws in them don't come back to haunt you. If low end of casing is at floor level or higher, place your pry bar in the small space between the jamb and the stud.

Interior door casing can be simple or complex depending on the wood, joinery, and detailing, and can be manipulated in dozens of ways. Head casing is the horizontal member that spans the top of the door frame.

Undercut door casings enough to install the planks underneath. Rest a side saw on a scrap hardwood plank to achieve the correct elevation and cut away the casing. Notch the planks to be installed, slide them beneath and secure them.

Designing Door Casing
We chose custom made, solid cherry interior doors and wanted to do something special to trim them off. Rather than using standard milled casing, we decided to go with ordinary stock pieces and designed our own.

Installing a colonial door casing
Doors can be trimmed out with the same traditional components that are shown for windows or they can be trimmed with simple colonial casing boards, which is the standard approach for most new houses.

foundation system, structural framing, and soil. These conditions do not, in our opinion, represent a failure of the
framing system.

Remember, the edge of the new closet must be flush with the outer edge of the door casing, so use care in our measurements at this point.

A quick tip on whether or not to cut tile around new door casing, or whether to cut door casing around the tile. Read on to find out why you might want to cut tile around casing.

The next step is to apply the door casing to the outside of the door. Once this is done, your ready for the door hardware. If everything went right, the bolt should engage the strike plate and the door should fit snuggly against the stops.

Drip Cap is a piece set on top of the door casing and

the bottom front edge. This groove caused water to
drip off the front edge rather rolling back to the door or
window casing.

For painting trim, like window and door casings, window sash and baseboards, a 2 1/2" angled sash brush works best and is most versatile.
Angled 3" brushes are good for wider trim and panel doors.

It is then followed by the installation of doors, window ledges, door casings, baseboards, and even stair treads and skirts, and other wood finishes which might be apart of your homes finish.

Alternatively, I use vinyl window and door casing, which is essentially a 2-1/2-in. wide J-channel. The greater width can enhance the window rather than detract from it as a narrow band of standard J-channel does.
