A door jamb is the vertical section of a door frame, which acts as a support for the remainder of the frame, as well as the door itself. Each frame has two jambs.

A damaged door jamb is cut away and replaced with clear pine. The door knob striker and deadbolt holes were re-drilled.

DOOR JAMB - Wood casing surrounding a door. Door opens and closes into this jamb.
DOUBLED-GLAZED - Insulating glass which is constructed of two panes of glass with a sealed air space between them.

Door jamb, interior: The surrounding case into which and out of which a door closes and opens. It consists of two upright pieces, called side jambs, and a horizontal head jamb. These 3 jambs have the "door stop" installed on them.

Step 4: Trim the Door Jambs
Lay a piece of flooring flat on the subfloor and up against the door jambs. Use it as a guide to mark the jambs so that the new flooring can slide underneath the jamb.

From inside the house, stuff fiberglass insulation into the gap between the door jamb and the wall framing. Make it snug, but don't stuff it in too tightly. Nail the brick mold 16" on center outside, and install the interior casing.

Note: You will come across websites and books that suggest that you hit the strike plate with a chisel or other heavy object to drive its position either up or down.

Find where the door is touching the door jamb and lightly draw some pencil marks on the area to be removed. You may be able to work on the door while it is hanging or you might have to remove it first.

Retractable doors work by "rolling up" into a housing that hangs vertically on the outside edge of the door jamb when you're not using them.

Deadbolts utilize a latch which is designed to move deep into the door jamb by turning a key, lever, or knob. The deadbolt is meant to back up the relatively low security of an entry lock.

Invest in strong locks, but remember that locks only make a connection between exterior doors, which are pretty solid, and door jambs, which aren't.

The ends of the new threshold have to be notched to fit around both door jambs. This creates a "horn" that extends under the casĀ­ing.
