Basic Double Hung Window Repair
"I have had so many requests about the old fashioned double-hung windows that I thought I would reprint a few letters that appeared in previous newsletters.

Definition: The double-hung window is the most common style of window available.

Double Hung Window: A window with two vertically sliding sashes. This is a very common older window design, was usually made out of wood and tends to require frequent repairs.

Double hung window- A window with two vertically sliding sashes, both of which can move up and down.
Down payment- The difference between the sales price and the mortgage amount. A downpayment is usually paid at closing.

DOUBLE HUNG WINDOWS
Double hung windows are a favorite because they're so aesthetically pleasing both from the outside and inside. Double hung means that the two halves of the window move up or down within the window frame.

Double Hung Window: A window with sashes that slide vertically and allow opening from the top and bottom.
Drywall: A gypsum board material used for walls or ceilings.

Double Hung windows: Windows with an upper and lower sash, each supported by springs.

Double hung windows are said to have unique window design features because they allow the top pane to be opened while the bottom remains immovable.

Double hung windows are windows having an upper and lower sash that slide up and down within the sash channel. Single hung windows have a similar appearance except that only the bottom sash moves.

Double hung windows have a bottom sash that can be raised, and a top sash that can be lowered. Many double hung windows offer the added benefit of the sashes tilting in for easy cleaning.

The most common style of operable window, it has two sashes that slide vertically in parallel tracks; a window with two overlapping sashes that slide vertically in tracks.

A wooden double hung window can be made more secure with the use of window pins. Use these in addition to the crescent latch designed to keep the double hung windows together; the latch by itself is not an effective safety device.

To test for powdering, place a piece of duct tape over the suspicious area making sure it is in full contact with the surface. Rub on the back side of the duct tape and then remove it.

Double hung windows slide up and down, while sliding units move from side to side. Casement and European-style windows swing in or out like doors. Hopper and awning units are hinged to tilt in from the bottom or out from the top.

But double hung windows are most popular for their ease in cleaning since they can be tilted into your home. Windows that come with movable sashes allow the sash to rotate 180 degrees outside the window frame.

Double hung windows offer more ventilation options because you can let air in from both the top or bottom of the window, and are also one of the more traditional styles of window.

BROKEN/FRAYED SASH CORDS-The cords along each side of a double hung window, which are attached to
counter weights in the wall. The sash cords hold the window open. The window will not stay open by itself if they are
broken.

I've tried puttying, painting, and am now at a loss as I cannot afford new windows. I have wooden, double hung windows and they work beautifully. Also, I have storm windows on the outside of my house.

Double hung window - A window that has two sashes which slide vertically in one frame. Both sashes are able to move independent of each other up and down.
