Add the cripples before the double top plate. Through-nailing is faster, stronger, and tidier than toenailing. Before adding the double top plate, I can through-nail into the king studs and the cripples.

 


GABLE - Steep triangular roof shape in which rafters are attached from ridge board to double top plate. A house with a gable roof usually has a spacious attic.

This old house is not like most newer 2-story houses, because on the second floor there are some sloping ceilings. On certain walls the double top plates are rather low, only 6'-5" above the floor, and the rafters begin there.

Note: Window and door openings do not need jack studs, except 4' window. The spacing for the windows and doors is small enough that the double top plate will carry the load.

When all your sill plates and top plates are marked, then measure and cut the vertical studs to length, taking into consideration (deducting) the sill plate and the double top plate thicknesses (totaling 4.5" if you are using standard lumber).

Make the wall 1 1/2 inches short (plus an 1/8") and after standing the wall up, slide in a double top plate. On the sections of wall that run parallel to the joists, nail in boards between the two joists to nail your top plate to.

Expanding foam is used to seal all holes bored in all double top plates.
