Clay Drain Tiles
Clay drain tiles are orange or red clay pipe sections, usually 2 feet in length with an interior diameter of approximately 3 to 3 1/2 inches. The 2 foot clay drain tiles are laid in a gravel bed.
Drain tile- A perforated, corrugated plastic pipe laid at the bottom of the foundation wall and used to drain excess water away from the foundation. It prevents ground water from seeping through the foundation wall.

In many cases, a 4" piece of drain tile will serve the same purpose. Mark the depth and location of the utility opening on your foundation plan or with a stake so you can find it easily later on.
Alternately, line the trench with drain tiles, skip the pipe, and fill with gravel. The water percolates through the gravel and the tiles divert it outside or into a sump.
A home contractor can tell you whether your basement requires a sump pump.
Exterior Drain Tile
I live in Wisconsin, and recently purchased a home with water problems the seller has agreed to cure the problem.
In extreme cases, you may have to dig out around the foundation and replace the fill with an exterior drain tile and with a good draining material such a clean gravel.
If you choose to put your storage underground, that is, bury it vertically in a post-hole like hole, then consider this: Get a piece of black corrugated plastic drain tile in the next size larger than the PVC container you have.
Good, four-inch drain tile should be used, laid parallel with, and at the bottom of the footing. Great care must be taken to see that the bottom of the tile is not lower than the bottom of the footings, so that the footings are not undermined.
A perimeter drain tile or gravel backfill can be effectively used to circumvent any water collection near the house foundation. This system will relieve hydrostatic pressure and allow the water to travel into the drain tile and away from the house.
At the foundation footing, drain tile is installed so that the water will run down the drain board and drain away from the house.
The third step in the process is to run drain tiles around the outside of the footings to keep water from collecting at the bottom of the panels. The water is then diverted down into pea rock where it drains away.

When a drainage system is used on a residential site, it is normally a mixture of a gravel layer alongside a residential foundation drain and a drain tile.
Make sure an adequate drain tile system is installed in the yard and superior water proofing materials are applied to the wall sheathing and the foundation. In humid areas, it may be safer to avoid vinyl wallpapering within the home.
