Duct Work
A crucial element in keeping your home safe, comfortable and energy efficient is your air duct system.

 


Duct Work:
This fan used 4" diameter exhaust duct, which is commonly available. Flexible duct is not recommended because its irregular surface creates too much resistance to air flow, and reduces the fan's efficiency.

Duct work for central air
Duct work is generally needed to carry cool air throughout the house in a central air conditioning system. If you have a forced air heating system you can usually use the same ducts for cooling.

The hardest area was the dormers and the ceiling of the third floor where there was duct work and limited space available. I also chose not to create any crawl space in any of the four attic spaces.

Although not as good as solid or cross bridging, a 2 X 4 supporting the duct work, as shown in Figure 4, would provide more support and load sharing than a light piece of metal.

What's frequently neglected, however, in building an efficient heat/cooling system is taping and sealing the duct work.
