An evaporator coil is a vital part of any heating or cooling system. It is usually found in an air conditioner, because evaporator coils are particularly good at absorbing heat when air is passed through their system.

Evaporator Coil or Indoor Coil
The other half of your air conditioning system located inside your home in the indoor unit. This is where the refrigerant evaporates as it absorbs heat from the air that passes over the coil.

You're right, if the unit keeps freezing up on the first pass of evaporator coils, there must be a leak.

The heat pump heater has a fan that draws in the outside air and directs it over the evaporator coil. Liquid refrigerant within the evaporator coil absorbs the heat from the outside air and becomes a gas.

All heat pumps have an outdoor unit (condenser) and an indoor unit (evaporator coil). A refrigerant carries the heat from one place to the other. When this liquid is compressed, it is a high temperature, high-pressure liquid.

Central air conditioning systems consist of an outside unit with a compressor, condenser coil and fan, and an interior evaporator coil installed in the supply duct of a warm-air furnace.

Supply air is cooled and dehumidified as it passes over an A-shaped evaporator coil. The liquid refrigerant evaporates inside the coil as it absorbs heat from the air.

Before replacing any parts, wipe inside the AC with a damp rag and dust the evaporator coils (located behind the filter) with a vacuum attachment. Then clean the drip tray according to the manufacturer's instructions.

A timer turns on a defrost heater about every 12 hours to warm the evaporator coils on the back of the refrigerator. Some freezers also include an automatic defroster while others must be defrosted manually.

Some cleaners are designed only for the condenser coils, some are designed for the evaporator coils, and some are designed for both. The cleaners should be non-acid.

A liquid refrigerant is pumped through an evaporator coil of tubing. The liquid expands as it moves through the coil, changing to its gaseous state as it absorbs heat from the air surrounding the coil.

The indoor unit is an evaporator coil mounted in the indoor-circulating air system, and the outdoor unit is an air-cooled condensing unit containing an electric motor-driven compressor and condenser fan and fan motor.

In this case, only an evaporator coil is connected to the ductwork. The point is, if you're paying through the nose for an inefficient system, don't automatically assume that a geothermal system is out of the question.
