Finger Joints
Fingerjointing is a process in which short pieces of high grade wood are end glued together to make long lengths of stock. The advantages to this process are cost and availability of long lengths.

 


Finger joint- A manufacturing process of interlocking two shorter pieces of wood end to end to create a longer piece of dimensional lumber or molding. Often used in jambs and casings and are normally painted (instead of stained).

finger joint (joint à languettes à emboîtement, m.) A glued joint consisting of a series of interlocking fingers, precision machined on the ends of two pieces of wood to be joined.

Finger Joint: A joint in which two pieces of wood are cut in an elongated zigzag pattern and joined together with glue.

Finger Jointing
A method of joining wood pieces milled in the shape of fingers, which mesh together and are held firmly in position by a water-resistant adhesive.

It's true that the finger joint can be cut by hand. But, the most efficient and most common method is to machine the entire joint. Both halves are nearly identical, except for the first and last fingers of each half.

Your choices will basically come down to finger jointed or not. Finger joints are notches in the ends of adjoining pieces of wood that fit together like puzzle pieces.

Stands for laminated veneer lumber: Timber is finger jointed and laminated together with a powerful adhesive. The timber is engineered for specific loads and spans.

Materials and styles include MDF, solid hardwood, finger jointed hardwood, oak, cedar, mahogany, pine and exotic lumbers. As well, baseboard is available with vinyl covering and pre-painted.

There are many different kinds of trim styles and colors to choose from. If you're really on a budget, you can get the finger joint pine and paint it. That actually looks pretty good.

Finne designed a similar 'zipper' detail in his kitchen counter: a finger joint between stone and black walnut creates contrast.

Paint-grade wood
Wood with minor flaws, like differences in grain or color, that will be hidden by a coat of paint.

Since the door was a solid wood rail-and-stile type of construction, the off-cut broke apart at the finger joints between sections, which was not a problem.
