Fire stop- A solid, tight closure of a concealed space, placed to prevent the spread of fire and smoke through such a space. In a frame wall, this will usually consist of 2 by 4 cross blocking between studs.

Fire stops at floors, walls and roofs must be made of entirely non-combustible materials. 9 inches is the typical clearance, however, it is 18 inches if galvanized steel or approved corrosion-resistant metal is not used.

Fire Stop: A complete obstruction placed across a concealed air space in a wall, floor, or roof to retard or prevent the spread of flame and hot gases.

This test exposes assemblies (walls, partitions, floor or roof assemblies, and through-penetration fire stops) to a standard fire exposure controlled to achieve specified temperatures throughout a specified time period.

Since the vertical spaces between studs can act as flues to transmit flames in the event of a fire, ''fire stops" are important in preventing or retarding fire from spreading through a building by way of air passages in walls, floors, and partitions.

Rodent runways can be behind double walls; therefore, spaces between walls and floor-supporting beams should be blocked with fire stops.

The walls can be conveniently built on the floor and then raised into position.
It is much easier to locate the placement of windows and doors.
Smaller lengths of lumber ( 2 x 4) are less expensive.
Separation between floors acts as a fire stop.

I run mine out to the edge of the chimney to ensure that when the flashing is added the water is run well away. You should remember to maintain your 1" clearance from combustible material for fire protection. The flashing will serve as the fire stop.

The piers shifted, causing the roof line to sag, siding to buckle, interior molding to pop, walls to separate from the ceiling, fire stop collar to fall down from the furnace flue - just to name a few problems.
