Flashings
The purpose of flashings is to prevent the entry of water at areas on a roof where two components join together or intersect (i.e. one roof to another or a chimney thru a roof).

Flashings nailed into a wall or chimney and covered with tar or asphalt roof cement are not adequate. Flashings should be mechanical and permanent. The use of asphalt roof cement or tar for flashing isconsidered a 'temporary repair.
Flashings around chimneys and vent pipes are often the culprit if you're experiencing leaks into your attic. This is a relatively simple repair that can include installing new flashing, or just properly sealing the flashing that is already there.
Roof Flashings Stop Leaks
Metal flashings cannot be replaced by a caulk in order to prevent roof leaks.
Flashings are the most technical and most difficult aspect of roofing in most cases. Traditional roof flashing methods and materials have stood the test of time, but they require experience and are time-consuming.

Where the flat roof abuts a wall there will be some form of sealing flashing - usually a zinc (or zinc substitute) strip.

Roll-roofing products are generally used in residential applications, mostly for underlayments and flashings. They come in four different types of material: smooth-surfaced, saturated felt, specialty-eaves flashings, and mineral-surfaced.

Metal flashings will also need to be placed over the mounts.
