Flat Ceiling - A ceiling with no change in elevation.

For a flat ceiling, the square footage is determined by multiplying the room length by room width. This room would be 10 by 12 for 120 square feet of ceiling. If the ceiling is a tray shape or other design, add in the extra depth.

Adhesives are most often used on perfect, flat ceilings, while metal clips or furring strips are used in a drop ceiling manner in all other situations.

In most flat ceiling and wall painting, the unwritten rule is to brush the edges of the ceiling, and then roll, trying to leave a wet edge as you move across the ceiling. With texture ceilings, the opposite is true.

Suspended ceiling: A flat ceiling built right under an existing ceiling. It could be aluminium suspended ceiling, fabric, fiberglass, acoustic, wire net, wooden ceilings of red oak, maple, and cherry hung from the ceiling joists with a metal grid.

Can I remove the existing flat ceiling in a upstairs bedroom and convert it to a vaulted ceiling? It currently has drywall attached to ceiling joists with attic space above.

A section of flat ceiling beneath the ridge or within a dormer window is the ideal surface for downlights. Where the ridge is higher, it may be possible to suspend pendants or a track lighting system.

These panels can be installed directly on the surface of a flat ceiling, if 3/8 in-thick plywood is installed first. But if the ceiling isn't flat, or if it's dam aged, install furring strips and shim them until they are flat.
