Footings
Spread Footings
Spread footings provide a stable base or platform that prevents the house from settling into the ground.

Footing trench excavation
So the backhoe operator is able to dig accurate trenches the trenches need to be marked out on the ground. To do this place a straight piece of timber under the string lines, make sure it is plumb and then mark with lime.

Footings For Another Pair Of Posts:
We also dug holes for a pair of posts that will support the handrail newel posts. Since these posts will bear little load, we simply dug 4-foot-deep holes and poured some concrete in them.

Footings must be located on undisturbed soil below the frost line. Check your local building codes for requirements regarding size, depth, and metal reinforcement.

Footing Drain Tile - A pipe with cracks at the joints to allow underground water to drain in and away before it gets into the basement.

Footing: The underground support for a foundation or support post.
Foundation: The supporting portion of a structure below the first floor construction, or below grade, including the footings.

Footing: The rectangular concrete forms found under foundation walls, slabs or above piers. Footings support the weight of the object above it.

Footing is a concrete base on which a foundation sits.
Foundation is the supporting portion of a house structure, which is usually below ground level.
Framing is the rough lumber of a a house-joists, studs, rafters and beams.

Footing- Trenches of poured concrete around the perimeter of the house or below each pier or column that supports and distributes the weight of the house to the ground.

FOOTING - A section of concrete that the house's foundation walls sit on.
FOUNDATION - A block, brick, stone, or concrete wall on which the house's framing is built. It is mostly below grade.

Footing " A widened, below-ground base of a foundation wall or a poured concrete, below-ground, base used to support foundations or piers.

FOOTING The construction whereby the weight of the structure is transferred from the base structure to the foundation.
FORMS Prepared forms of timber or other material for the casting of concrete.

Footing: A structural element that transmits loads directly to the soil.
Freeze-thaw durability: The ability to resist damage from the cyclic freezing and thawing of moisture in materials and the resultant expansion and contraction.

FOOTINGS - Wide pours of cement reinforced with re-bar (reinforcing bar) that support foundation walls, pillars, or posts. Footings are part of the foundation and are often poured before the foundation walls.

Footing: The concrete base upon which a foundation rests.
Foundation: Lower parts of walls upon which a structure is built. Foundation walls of masonry or concrete usually are below ground level.

FOOTING: Poured concrete base upon which foundation walls, columns, or chimneys rest; usually has steel reinforcing bars.
FOOTING FORM: A wooden or steel form used to hold concrete to the desired shape and size until it hardens.

FOOTING: That portion of the foundation of a building or home which transmits loads directly to the soil; may be the widened part of a wall or column. Used to spread the load over a greater area to prevent or reduce settling.

Footing - A trench excavated below and around the perimeter of the building, usually filled with concrete, brickwork or masonry, which becomes the foundation to support and distribute the weight of the building to the ground.

Footing - Continuous 8" or 10" thick concrete pad installed before and supports the foundation wall or monopost.
Footing Wall - A continuous spread footing that supports a uniform load from a wall.

peat footings (semelle de tourbe, f.) Footings placed on granular fill laid on top of peat, possible when the peat is not too deep and when the home does not have heavy building features such as masonry fireplaces and chimneys.

Footing and Piers (see image) - Use a plumb bob from the string to establish the location of the footings. The holes for the footings must be deeper than the maximum frost penetration in your area, and deep enough to rest on undisturbed soil.

Footings and posts support the beams which support the joists and the deck boards. The bigger deck, the more footings you'll need.
What size beams will be needed for the spans between posts?

The footings supporting your deck are crucial to its welfare, yet since they're largely unseen, it's tempting to treat them with nonchalance.

The footing distributes the weight of the building over a sufficient area of ground to ensure that the foundation walls will stand properly. Footings are usually concrete; however, in the past, wood and stone have been used.

Adequate footing drains, installed correctly, as well as a sump pump in the basement (with a battery backup) need to be installed to prevent possible hydrostatic pressure causing ground water leaks in the future.

Ensure the footing/cavity is uniformly three-inches deep and slopes away from the house foundation. When the bottom is uniform, tamp the soil to compact it to prevent subsequent settling beneath the concrete pavers.

Constructing footings for your deck or porch project is relatively easy if you take time check the span charts for your beam and measure the locations correctly.
Some contractors will install beam posts directly .

Deck Piers and Footings
Decks that need piers or footings must have them installed below the frost line. This will keep the piers from heaving up out of the ground from the strength of the freeze.

Polystyrene foundation forms are set on conventional footings, much like building a Lego's wall. Concrete is placed into the forms where it cures to form both the structural and thermal components of the basement wall.

Installation of draintile around the footings, at least on the sides where trouble is occurring. This procedure is generally recommended in addition to one or more methods above.
